Waste recycling presents an opportunity to save our natural resources, reduce environmental impact of waste disposed at lndfills, and create employment opportunities. In South Africa, the majority of commercial waste recycling initiatives has been developed on an ad hoc basis and has been driven by the private sector, with Government financial support primarily to some recycling industries like the plastic and rubber sector.
Waste Management services rely heavily on landfills for the disposal of waste, as over 90% of all South African’s waste is disposed of at landfill sites. The reliance on waste disposal by landfills has limited the incentive to devise alternative methods of dealing with waste.
